I just received this from Isabelle and, oh my god I had a good laugh. It is sooooooo terribly materialistic that I thought it could be a good counter balance for my Buy Nothing Day post. Enjoy!

BUY NOTHING DAY

I support this Buy nothing day for a few years now. I even organized a workshop with Anette Lenz at our school of design a few years ago. I suggest that we spread this event to the whole Christmas Season. We could send Santa Claus for a well-deserved retirement trip for a few years.

Paddywax | design by Principle

This is another good example of molded recycled pulp used as package material for a candle maker that asked for a green package. This was designed by Design by Principle studio.

360° | Brand image

I just found this on Core77. The 360 paper water bottle from Brand Image is an attempt to address 60 million plastic bottles thrown away daily in the United States (of which 86% become garbage). The paper vessel is made from 100% renewable food-safe resources, fully recyclable and versatile in a number of potential liquid categories.

Man as a box | Homer Mendoza

In my introduction class, we are working presently on a project that I particularly like. It consists of a transposition of a known character into a box. Here’s a project designed by Homer Mendoza a few years ago. The four unfolding parts box represents John Lennon.

And in the "pinch me, I must be having a nightmare" and the "oh my god they were all drunk at that time" categories... Here, I sure would need some explanations, because they could all qualify as the «what not to do in packaging» as far as I am concern.
I would like to underline that, despite the fact Pentawards pretends to be THE world packaging design award, they still don't have a "green", "eco" or "sustainable" design category.

Not a box | David Graas

Not a box but a lamp. This concept by the Dutch designer David Grass was developed simultaneously with one of my student's work in 2007 (below). Research sometimes brings us on common paths.

Pandor | Death is good marketing

When I saw this new concept for Pandor 40% and 69% Absinthe, I couldn't help but thinking about the Peter Greenaway movie : The Cook the Thief His Wife & Her Lover. In a remarkable scene Richard Bohringer is lecturing about black food and our relation with death «... death I can eat you...»

Es-tu de taille? | Vanessa Caron

This project designed by Vanessa Caron is one good idea that came out of my packaging class. Vanessa was looking to develop a package for healthy chips with a reference to fitness. The final idea of an unrolling measuring tape package was Vanessa’s answer to a very prolific class brainstorm.

Calendrier d'allumettes | Yurko Gutsulyak

"The idea was to create as unique a calendar so that the process of its presenting would become an outstanding event. Alongside with this, it was important to expose the idea of "energy", as it is predetermined by the name and logo of the company. Each page is a month and it looks like a comb made of matches that correspond to the days. The matches are real and the construction of the calendar is absolutely safe."

Browsing threw images of student’s projects; I found this work from Christine Beauchesne. She was working on an awareness campaign for over consumption proposing wood fire starter that had the shape and image of a dollar bill.
One year later, with the enormous economical crisis that is shaking up the root of the capitalism, as we knew it until now, the image suddenly seam to have another meaning. In a world where speculators get billions of dollars to cover their mess and where CEO’s fly with their private jet to Washington to cry for help without proposing any change in their more than thirty years old opposition to change, one can find a certain pertinence in this image. What do you think?

This is a very well known TV show on CBC French television. It talks about food in general, inform people on products etc. I must say it is a very down to earth concrete show, but very well done. This week was a special on over packaging in the grocery stores. What was terrible was the answer given by the Vice-president of the Canadian Council of Grocery Distributors when asked to comment on an obvious case of over packaging. His answer if I may translate sounded like: « sometimes there might be over packaging, but it is a process that is in process of improvement. » Wow! What a statement… I feel better now do you?

GaiaKraft | Le papier minéral

GaiaKraft is all about sustainable development. GaiaKraft bags and packaging is made from paper that comes from natural stone (calcium carbonate) meaning it is tree-free! This tree-free paper differs from traditional paper in that it is made from a high percentage of mineral powder and a small percentage of non-toxin resin. What’s more is that the process used to make the paper uses no water or bleach like traditional wood pulp paper.

eco emballage | Jan Ctvrtnik
Étiquetage solaire

That’s a nice experimentation done by a Japanese guy on apples. The Mac logos were applied on the Apples during ripening printing a permanent mark on the fruits.
Coca-Cola | Individual Perseverance | Jiang Hua

I know, this is a little late news, but when I saw this Coca-Cola bottle in Paris last month, I just grabbed it without realizing what it really was. In fact it is one of the eight bottles designed by eight international artists selected by Coca-Cola or the WE8 concept that was: foster cultural and artistic exchange between artists from around the world, to express the global connections embodied in the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

Artiste mystérieuse | Jackie Dimock

«The free artwork has been puzzling and delighting residents in Stourbridge, West Midlands, and surrounding villages since the bottles started appearing in the spring. For months, they have provided a daily doorstep puzzle for mystified homeowners. When they go to pick up their milk, they find extra bottles. The bottles are empty. But etched on them are pictures of animals, often cows or mice, carefully carved into the glass in astonishing detail. Mystery revealed: Charlotte Hughes-Martin engraves milk bottles and then randomly delivers them to houses in the West Midlands» Andy Dolan - Daily Mail.

- Metallic 4 color process cover
- Plastic window
- Metallic 4 color process box
- Cardboard 4 color process display
- 2 pyramidal cones printed 1 color
- Decorative 4 color process leaves
- 2 1 color stickers under the cones
- and finally the beautiful pyramidal tea pouches.
- Oh I forgot, the whole thing was shrink wrapped

Icône chocolaté
Sauve qui poule | l'emballage transparent

If historically the packaging have progressively replaced the seller to make self service supermarkets possible, it also have lost a certain sense of humor that the seller might have in the old days. Catherine Forand was exploring that aspect in her chicken broth package having a cynical approach on the way we treat the animal we eat.

Bon enfin «ERC». On dit qu'on a les politiciens qu'on mérite... Ça me laisse perplexe.
Apart from the political statement I just wrote above, Nataliane Roy and Marie-Ève Gagné designed this project in my class a few years ago. It was a boot-dripping-container to be put in your hall for your winter boots. The packaging was also very well thought with a simple, functional, resistant, pedagogical and green solution.

- = + | Audrey Guillemette

I like this project designed in my packaging class by Audrey Guillemette. The product is very simple. It’s bicarbonate of soda proposed as a replacement for toxic and expensive house cleaning products. The cardboard package works like a big saltshaker that dredges bicarbonate. Its name is - = +. It could also be a clever name for the actual worldwide stock exchange saga don’t you think?

Amazon introduit l'emballage responsable

I was thrilled to find out that Amazon.com decided to make a significant switch in its packaging policy. The company was not exactly a model in that field, but it's slowly introducing better boxes without all these useless windows and not recyclable materials. It just goes to show that when one start thinking, it could inspire others.
Bacardi Corto | Feldmann+Schultenchen

This was designed by the German studio Feldmann + Schultenchen for the new Corto shooter for Bacardi. What looks like a clever idea here is not really? That's a lot of material for a very small amount of product. Reusable are you going to say? Yes but who’s going to need so many shooter glasses?

Beringer | Su Blackwell | Pause publicitaire
I just found this beautiful commercial designed by Su Blackwell for Beringer Wines in 2007. The similarity with the actual commercial promoting the Quebec local products is too obvious for it to be accidental. Looking at this one (much better by the way) I know it's the original.

Carlsberg 900 | Werk Studio

We all know Carlsberg beer, but did you know they make this Carlsberg 900 special limited edition. Only 200 of these boxes are available. The Swedish Studio Werk nicely designed it. From an environmental point of view though... makes me want to send a few environmental report on global warming in Sweden.
